RHEL 5.x boot from SAN - Broadcom 57840 (bnx2fc)

Hey guys,

First of, here's my setup:

Dell M1000e chassis with m630 diskless blades, equipped with quad port 57840 broadcom adapter, backend SAN is a Compellent (Fiber channel w/ Brocades).

So now, I'm trying to Boot From SAN, on RHEL 6.4+ I have no problem, no disk driver required or anything.

On RHEL 5.5+ (tried 5.8, 5.10 and 5.11), I tried to load the "netxtreme2-7.10.14-rhel5uXX-x86_64-dd.iso" during install and nothing... I get to the filesystem selection portion and when I chose advanced I only get ISCSI boot, no FcOE...

From what I can read...and I read A LOT... There is no way to FcOE boot to install 5.x...

Anybody have any experience with this kind of setup that could possibly help me out?

Thank you!
Pantelis

I do not mean to sound crude, but I seeing rhel 5 is almost about to hit the sack, is it not worthwhile to upgrade to rhel 6? Especially since you state the problem does not exist in a newer version.

If you are adament on running rhel5 then the best bet would be vendor support from either your interface manufacturer, blade supplier or rhel themselves.

If all elsefails, just install the old fashion way and then load the required drivers after you have the base system running.

From the details you have described it is clear that rhel 5 doesnot load the required kernel module that includes drivers for your device. This is pretty normal since newer kernels tend to have greater support. So it may be worthwile looking at the specific module your card uses and then see if that is available to load at boot time of the installation disk.

Honestly though, I would personally just use rhel 6 or 7, I do not think this one to loose sleep over.
