It's saying that there is no lockfile in /bin /usr/bin or /sbin. I did a locate for 'lockfile' and it doesn't exist.

So how do I get 'lockfile?'

As suggested...

Using the DOS version of the BIOS with FreeDos might be an easier way forward. You should be able to use a diskette or a live-cd as virtual diskette to flash the BIOS. There is even a recent thread with some useful information on the matter. See the link in post 12.

"lockfile" just refers to a file that is readonly...
http://linux.about.com/library/cmd/blcmdl1_lockfile.htm
... the name would be specified by the shell script running (somthing.lock).

If you are still using sudo that might be the source of your current problem. Redhat distros do not normally come with sudo setup. Just boot normally (run lvl 3 or 5) and login as root. Remember that the command to is "su -" the - enters you into the environment of the user you are switching to. (su = switch user) A default user will not have /sbin in their enviroment... normally. I admit I do not have much experience with RHEL.

Just out of curiosity, why is you need to update the bios anyway?

I'm updating the bios because I have a PCIE x1 card in slot 5, (tried every other slot) and I'm getting some kind of critical error message on the front LCD screen. The card works fine, but the error won't go away. The card is in an x8 slot, but x1 works in any slot.

However it says it's missing /tmp/filename.bin[some numbers appended]/spsetup.sh

Turns out that you need to use a live CD, such as Dell's OMSA CentOS 5.4 disc. The bin file runs, but never writes to the bios, it basically says "update failed, timeout error." Anyone ever hear about this?
