RHEL 5.3 serial port not working

I have RHEL 5.3 installed on HP ProLiant DL320 Generation 5 but i cant get serial port working

dmesg | grep tty
serial8250: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
00:09: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A

setserial -g /dev/ttyS[0123]
/dev/ttyS0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4
/dev/ttyS1, UART: unknown, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3
/dev/ttyS2, UART: unknown, Port: 0x03e8, IRQ: 4
/dev/ttyS3, UART: unknown, Port: 0x02e8, IRQ: 3

but when i put cat on ttyS0 and plug mouse into serial i get no response
cat /dev/ttyS0

is there something special to configure?

thanks

you can use setserial to setup the serial port to the parameters you need (like say the baud rate the input is at)

What are you trying to accomplish and what type of device are you trying to connect to the serial port?

I like to use minicom with a serial loop back plug to test serial ports. The mouse outputs binary data which may or may not be displayed using the cat command and the serial port needs to be configured for 4800,8,n,1 (If my memory still works...).

i want to connect gps palisade through serial port.
speed is ok.
we have one server on which this device is working. irq, speed and address is the same on both servers. one is ht proliant g3 new one is g5. but also on other g3 it is not working.
everywhere the speed, irq and address is the same but only on one g3 (also mouse) is serial port working.
i dont know if i have to turn it on somehow

I assume this is the unit
http://www.cni.org/xntp/driver29.htm

Since the device is recognized it should be on. A loop back plug will verify that data is actually being transmitted and received.

It could be possible that the 16550 UART is broken on the input side.
