in debian if i want to mount a windows share i have to have smbmnt/smbmount and smbfs installed then i can mkdir and mount a share to that new directory.
i have 1 RH9 workstation that has given me fits before when trying to install debian so im leaving it on RH9 for now. i use yum with the 2 legacy repositories from the FC line and an other repository to access clamAV. as this workstation is only used for POS (point of sale) i was going to put it to work as a virus scanner for the windows systems in that LAN. my problem is when i try to yum install any of the above files/programs/what ever they are to my RH box i get no package found no action taken errors.
does RH9 not use the standard smbmount/smbmnt and smbfs to gain access to NTFS or windows shares? if so were can i get them prefferably via yum repository as i hate fighting with the rpm dependancy hell. if not, what do i need to do in order to mount the shares in my little LAN to my RH9 workstation so clamAV can scan them?
the fact that it's NTFS is, and will always be, irrelevant. you're going through SMB / CIFS protocols to reach that file system, so you need to be concerned about using Samba to reach a samba server, and what's on the inside of samba is not your concern.
redhat9 will use samba EXACTLY the same way as any other distro of the last 10 years... "smbmount" or "mount -t smbfs"
ok that is good to know, but were do i get the smbmount or smbfs so that i can have access to them? as stated i tried running yum install X and got errors for smbmount/smbmnt/smbfs/sambamnt all came back as none exsisting packages.
in terms of likely package candidates, it will either be part of "samba" as a whole, or failing that probably "samba-client", or maybe even "samba-common". no idea why they love splitting pakcages up so much....
