I can't vouch for 8.0 or 9.0 but it worked perfectly for me in 7.3 and Fedora core 1.
Have you tried installing the needed stuff with apt4rpm?

Things that help is to post resulting error messages from running something, so try running from an x terminal and pasting any error messages (use the code tags).
Another way is to tail the messages log. You can do this live by:
Code:
Wed May 19 03:56 AM fancy@uilleann ~ $ su -
Password:
Wed May 19 03:57 AM root@uilleann ~ # tail -f /var/log/messages

Keep an eye on this terminal for kernel ring messages, then you can decide for yourself to whether or not shoot yourself in the head.
I think it only took 10-12 tries for my first working kernel. Now, with an unfamiliar kernel with bunches of changes, I average 3 tries to get a good 'un. (a knoppix cd is so handy to have lying around when you completely screw up someting..)
I had rather make a new kernel and gain tons of speed and support for new hardware than shoot myself in the head any day.
Oh, I just looked and I found an old popgun. If I can find a cork to fit it now, I can try and see if it will help.
Later:
No, it doesn't help.
