RH8.0, Xfree86 4.3.0 upgrade, lost Gnome standard defaults...
Hi,
I had video problems in the orginal RH8.0 installation (repeated items on menus etc) and updated with the Xfree86 4.3.0 binaries.
Now I do not have the Gnome desktop icons, panel, etc, for all of the users on the system. I just have a window with "xsm:default" and xterm window.
How do I force back the original default items? I'm sure the update wrote over the info but I'm not sure what files in the X11 directories have to be modified.
TIA,
Joel Katzman

You have overriden your configuration files during the XFree86 installation. To restore your originals, you would either: need to uninstall XFree86 from your system (if you don't want to loose any software that may depend on it, such as GNOME, KDE, etc, use rpm -e --nodeps), then reinstall the X enviroment form the RH CD's and then install the tgz binaries from the XFree Project.
However, you may also need to uinistall GNOME/KDE and restore them from your CD to restore the system's desktop environment. When you reinstall XF 4.3 do not overwrite your configuration files!! (if you use a Radeon/nVidia based videocard, you may also want to uninstall your drivers first!)
I know that by doing this and a reinstall would not be a great difference... but that is what I know about it... Anyway, mabe there would be another way to get the files you overwrote form the web?
