it's "rpm -e package-name", no .rpm

Well, just because it doesn't return anything doesn't mean it did not uninstall the package. Say you want to uninstall gkrellm which you installed via rpm. If you do:

rpm -qa | grep gkrellm

it will return something like this:

gkrellm-2.1.12-fr1a

Now you uninstall it by doing:

rpm -e gkrellm

Nothing is returned but you can make sure the package has been uninstalled by doing:

rpm -qa | grep gkrellm

It will return nothing which means there is no gkrellm package installed.
