RH 8.1, computer stuck at GRUB prompt, wont respond

Ack! I'm running RH 8.1 and ran some updaters of the RHN and rebooted. My computer starts up, gets past the bios screens and then I get a blinking cursor on the screen for about 20 seconds then GRUB appears with the cursor after it. It doesn't respond to keyboard input, escape key, nothing, no mouse, nothing just 'GRUB ', what happened? Why won't it boot up, where did this 'grub' come from and why won't it respond to any input?

i had the same problem with redhat linux 9 and reinstalling worked

Ugh, this is a server so I don't want to reinstall, I've run into a ton of other problems and resolved them all and don't really want to start over. There must be some solution. I don't even want GRUB installed, how can I uninstall it (assuming I can boot in with a floppy).
