Restore Tape Data made by ARCServ?

I'm running a debian box that used to be a file server a while back. It has a tape drive, and was originally a Novell NetWare server running ARCServe.

I really don't want to reinstall ARCServe, because all I need to do is be able to recover stuff, not store it. Is there an open-source, preferrably small, method of recovering data from these old tapes?

(perhaps mounting them manually and browsing them as though they were hard drives? or is that wishful thinking?)

I hate the idea of risking my webserver going down just because we have to install antiquated backups software to restore a powerpoint presentation from 2 years ago.... bah.

Any ideas on restoring data from a tape backup drive recorded using ARCServe?

You can not mount a tape nor browse their contents. I would assume that ARCserve uses its on file format. You could try dumping a backup via the dd command and look at its contents. There might a catalog at the end of the file If the tape is compressed then this will complicate your efforts even more.

I would assume that the backup files are the same format between the different OSs and your easiest solution would be to install ARCserve.
