Resolution problem

Hello, my problem is with changeing resolutions in X, For normal use I want the resolution 1152x864 because anything higher and my refresh rate would be set at 60 and we all know how annoying that is. I would like to change it to 1280x960 to play certain games (half life gta3 etc..) I can do this manually but I have to go back to runlevel 3 each time I change it. Is there some way for me to change on the fly.
The string "1280x960" does not exist in my config file:
Modes= "1152x864" "1024x768"....
So I can't just use the ctrl + alt +. When I add it in the beginning:
Modes= "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768"....
It switches everything to that resolution, if I add it anywhere else:
Modes= "1152x864" "1024x768".... "1280x960"
(with the intention of switching to it when need be (by using the ctrl+alt combo) It displays in 1152x864 but the total size of my screen is 1280x960 in other words I am only seeing an 1152x864 sized square of the 1280x960. When x starts I see the upper left portion of it but I can scroll around. Is there some way to set it so that usually it's at 1152x864 but I can change it when situation calls for?

edit: I forgot to add when I select the 1280x960 option in scenarui 1 in the game it generates the game 1280x960 size but I am still viewing it in 1152x864 in other words similiar to scenario 3. The other two scenario's are unsatisfactory because of the refresh rate (2) and the viewable area (3)

Thanks for any help!
