Resizing partitions under linux , how and which software makes it best !!!
 

Hi

I need to resize some of my partitions on a linux server (Red Hat 7.2)

I found GNU Parted program , installed it but it can not resize the main partition because it needs to be booted from a diskette and when I started searching for such thing I found that there have been some problem with this boot diskettes and the program and they were removed for download.

So can anyone tell me a good sofware that works and is reliable

If you have a Winb^Hdows partition laying around, you can go buy a copy of PartitionMagic 8, which will manipulate ext2/ext3 partitions without data loss. If you don't, then you'll have to make a custom boot diskette (I'd just go get ahold of tomsrtbt and copy parted onto it).

i'd say there will never be anything better than partition magic. no need to have a dos partition, just get a boot disk with pm on it.

Unless you don't have a floppy drive (i.e. a laptop).

mandrake boot CD's make the trick, maybe redhat has a similar thing?

There' s also QTParted... While Patition Magic is probably better, I was having problems loading it. So a Linux partition program was needed. QTParted worked miracles for me. I had to resize from NTFS to FAT, then move files... resize, move, resize etc... until the partition was all FAT. It didn't fail once (though your results might vary, so backup first if you can).

boot disk can be a floppy or a cd, doesnt change anything at all... cd is cool cos u can add some apps on it like ghost...
