resizing non-LVM partition

Working with Redhat Enterprise ES4. I am messing around with VMWare Server and I created an image, but I've decided I want to increase the size of the root partition on that virtual machine. Mainly I want to do this for the opt directory. While I think I am going to end up just creating a new virtual disk and mounting it as the /opt partition, it did make me curious as to how I could resize the root partition.

Since this is a non-LVM partition, I've heard it can be difficult to impossible...does anyone have any ideas? When I boot up into linux rescue mode off of the DVD and I don't mount the partitions I don't seem to have access to many resizing tools.

Any thoughts on what I can do, can I do anything?

You can do with qtparted using any of the stadard linux live/rescue CDs, e.g. knoppix or systemrescuecd. I did it once manually here.
