I really did something stupid!!
I went into Windows and opened Partition Magic. and then said yes without really looking. Now my disk is all messed up and Ican't get into linux. When I try to use the FC3 rescue function (on the DVD) it says there are errors, knoppix's partimage also says it found errors on the partition and explore2fs on windows will no longer open it. I only got into windows after erasing the mbr.

I did make a copy of the partition info which goes something like:
Code:
Disk Geometry Information for Disk 1: 9729 Cylinders, 255 Heads, 63 Sectors/Track
System PartSect # Boot BCyl Head Sect FS ECyl Head Sect StartSect NumSects

Info: Begin C,H,S values were large drive placeholders.

can this help me to restore the partition info to a state where I can make a good copy with partimage or even get the system completely back on line again?

I'm about to go into the deep end again... unless somebody tells me how to do it better.
I've made backups using partimage even though it told me there were errors in my filesystem. I'm gambling it is related exclusively to the fact that the partition table is corrupted, and not the data on the partitions (???). I'll burn these images onto cd if I can, wipe out all corrupted partitions and start over again. .. keeping my fingers crossed.
