resize avi files

Hey folks,

I need to resize some avi files. The dvd rips I have are XVID 640x352 and I need to either resize them to 800x600 or re-encode them as H.264 at 1920x1080. I've been flipping through google and found a zillion pages with all sorts of advice, but nothing that I've been really able to get working. Has anyone out there done this before, or do you have some advice where to start?

Thanks!

my personal choice would always be mencoder via command line, it's pretty easy to do there, but you *will* lose quality, and the idea of putting it into x264 seems odd at best as you've not got nearly enough source data to validate it. You might also try my program, acidrip, which provides a gui for mencoder to make it simpler.

Take a look at Avidemux. It is all about changing video formats and its gui makes it a lot easier to use.

I got avidemux and it looks like the right tool for the job. Thanks for your suggestion. I added a filter to resize my video, now just to figure out how to save a new file through the filter....

ffmpeg
transcode
mencoder
avifile

and others. libx264 (H264) is a WIP, so videolan.org for the latest version.

vlc
cinelerra
lives
and others if you need a gui (quasi or otherwise).

I'm not sure why you're upscaling relatively low res videos. But that resolution seems 16:9 and your destination 800x600 is 4:3, so be sure to pad appropriately or go for an appropriate resolution that matches the aspect ratio. Otherwise you're going to be looking at weird ratios. Look ma, tall people. Look ma, fat people....

Shadow 7, please realise that this is an OLD thread, that was dragged up for spamming, and is not a current question.

2009 isn't that old. But I see your point.
