reset the tape device


I run RH system and have a tape device , the device seems have a problem that the tape can't eject out , could suggest how to reset the tape drive or SCSI device so that it can be eject the tape but no need to reboot the server ? thx in advance.

The tape needs to be unloaded before it can be ejected.
If it is unloaded then you might have a hardware problem.
To check status of the tape drive:
mt -f /dev/st0 status

To unload
mt -f /dev/st0 offline
or
mt -f /dev/st0 unload

Change /dev/st0 to the device ID of your tape drive.

I know the default device path is /dev/st0 , but my device path seems not /dev/st0 , could suggest how do I know it ? thx.

Look at the output of dmesg.

I check that /dev/st0 is the tape device , but when I try to unload it , it have the below messages , I use it for long time , but it don't in these few days , could suggest how can I connect it back ? thx.


mt -f /dev/st0 offline
/dev/st0: No such device or address

Does the OS still recognize the drive?
Look at the output of:
cat /proc/scsi/scsi

Look at the output of lsmod. Does it show the st module loading as well as the SCSI controller module?

Have you change any configuration in the last few days?
