Rescue CD with networking and file transfer

I have an old server running RH9, but last weekend it just crashed. I don't know why or how it crashed, but it was still running but the networking had failed and the root password appeared to have corrupted. I managed to get around the root password problem, and I tried to upgrade to FC3 but it failed miserably. I kept getting segmentation faults every time I tried to do anything. Now if I try to boot off the hard disk, it says

kernel panic: no init found. Try passing init= option to boot kernel.

Anyway I have booted from the FC3 rescue CD, which allows me to access the files - which is great for configuring my new server - but I have lots of files which I would like to copy onto the new server, probably via my Windows PC. Is there a rescue CD which would allow me to do this, with either SSH file transfer, ftp, Samba etc? I have found a rescue CD which allows me to network the server but then I don't know if and how I can copy files from it. I'm not a complete novice with Linux but I'm only an amateur at best!

You should try out "The Penguin Sleuth Kit". It's basically a Knoppix CD with additional recovery tools.

Thanks very much, I'll download it and try it out. It looks like it has all the tools I need, let's hope it's easy to use!
