Replacing Photoshop with GIMP

I want to create a list of online links about performing common Photoshop tasks in GIMP. The list is for Windows XP refugees migrating to Linux. My goal is to provide these refugees a way to adapt to GIMP. These folks are not professional Photoshop users but occasionally use Photoshop.

My challenge is I know nothing about Photoshop. I know nothing about what tasks are commonly performed in Photoshop. About the only task I am aware is replacing a person's head in a photo with a different person's head. Not knowing a thing about Photoshop or how many people use Photoshop makes my search a challenge.

While learning which plugins are preferred, that information alone will not help me because I need to know what equivalent Photoshop task those plugins replace.

I am not asking for tutorials in this thread. I am only seeking a list of common tasks many non professional Photoshop users might perform. From there I should be able to find online links, but I'll appreciate any links offered here.

As always, thank you!

not sure if i understand the question, but there was one thing in photoshop i've always missed in gimp - it was called "highlights and shadows" iirc, and it would highlight the foreground (persons face) and make the background (sky) darker. or lightne up shadows whilst keeping the rest of the photo intact.
i'd love to see something like that in gimp.

http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/
http://registry.gimp.org/

and a cool tool
G'Mic ( a terminal tool and a gimp plugin )
http://gmic.sourceforge.net/

Gimp simply can't replace Photoshop for advanced uses. It is a great way for a beginner and maybe some professionals to do a number of tasks. People who work with Photoshop all day and have taken classes and courses now how powerful it is and how to use more of the features.

If you know nothing or little about Photoshop then it would be difficult to write any comprehensive list of tasks one might desire to know. You'd have to become an expert in Photoshop and Gimp to provide a reference.

For most soho users, a simple web search for task in photoshop with the word gimp returns enough hits.

Please read my original post. I am not discussing advanced users and I am not interested in Yet Another Debate about Photoshop vs. GIMP.

Except I do not know those tasks.

Ah. I did not know about those tutorials. That should help as one source.

Thanks but that is way beyond the scope of what I want to do.

All I am seeking is a list of common tasks. I'll do the searching from there but I don't even know the common Photoshop terminology to start a search. Other than how do I replace a head in a photo.

Nope, I sure don't.

As I recall there are or was a listing of all menu possibilities for Photoshop at Adobe. It also described the use and function of the menu item. It has quite a lot by default. Might see if that exists.

The best resource I've found on the GIMP is Meet the Gimp. It has an excellent series of video tutorials which are up to number 198.
