Apology accepted, although you may be right if OS is using UUID.

Hi, Everyone,

I am happy to report that I finally successfully reformatted the first-installed Linux Mint 11 OS at /dev/sda1, using gparted as follows.

1. Select /dev/sda1 and then use Partition to reformat it to ext4.
2. Select Edit> Apply All Operations.
3. Issue 'sudo update-grub'.

I've also subsequently deleted /dev/sda1 via gparted, using the Partition pull-down menu. I wish to thank everyone who has responded to my post so enthusiastically. Now Linux Mint 11 no longer appears in the grub boot menu.
