Remote X

I had a friend in college who I haven't seen in a while who used to run X on his machine at home and then boot off of a CD in his laptop into his machine at home. I was wondering which tool you guys would recommend for me to use for this. I have a linux box and a laptop and i want to boot up and log into X from my laptop, but using my servers resources. I have looked around, I know where is X forwarding and XDMCP, but I would like to be able to do it from outside my network as well.

Running X directly at anything other than LAN speeds won't be too fun (too slow). Also, not secure unless you tunnel it over ssh or something similar.

I would look into FreeNX. It runs X over an encrypted connection and is MUCH faster than plain old X. You need to install the FreeNX server on your box (download for free from http://freenx.berlios.de/ ) and then use a NX client on your laptop. NX clients can be downloaded free from NoMachine ( http://www.nomachine.com ) Clients are available for Windows, Linux, Mac, Solaris, etc.
