Remote Desktop Linux w/ Windows

I use KRDC to remote desktop Windows machines from my Linux box, but I want to be able to remote desktop my Linux box from a Windows machine. What software would I need and what ports would I need to open on my firewall to do this?

I would recommend a flavor of vnc such as tightvnc http://www.tightvnc.com. You can find out what ports from the documentation

Thank you for your help. Shortly after making this post I found the www.vnc.com website and downloaded the Windows version for my laptop, and just left a VNC server running on my linux box (it came with vnc apps) It's a little more sluggish than Remote Desktop, but it gets the job done, and I also haven't taken the time to customize the settings.

Try FreeNX .. http://freenx.berlios.de/

Much faster than VNC (way faster) and far more secure as well.

I'm with dbogdan. There's instructions for using freenx with fedora here. You won't be able to use the rpms, but it should give you a start.

FreeNX is a good alternative showing great promise from what I have heard, but it is a less mature app (beta 0.4) compared to VNC (1.x).

just curious but have you tried using rdesktop from rdesktop.org for doing it the other way round...

i.e. instead of KRDC

just wondering if there is a big difference between the two coz i might decide to switch

I've had freenx going without any trouble at all. It took longer to set up the clients on windoze boxes than it did to install the server. My only gripe is that you can only use one key for ssh.

they are both using the RDP just one is CLI (rdesktop) and one is GUI, KRDC.

also with KRDC you have a bit more options to play with when connecting. rdesktop is only for RDP and does not talk with VNC server, from what i have seen.

i have used both, and still use both, but the GUI clients are just simpler to configure all of the information in a set of clicks vs. remembering every argument for rdesktop

rdesktop -o -u etc... i have to look things up every time specially if i want to have rdesktop open in a set res like 1024x768 vs 800x600 the default res for rdesktop, yes you can use the -f, but there are many times i do not want to use the full screen option. some times the windows system i am remotting into has a higher res then the linux box i am working on. that is an issue with the -f and is were -geometry comes in handy.

both are good. if you are comfortable with rdesktop, there is no real reason to switch over to any of the GUI RDP/VNC clients.
