remote desktop connecting (fedora 2)
 

i am running slackware 10, but my school runs fedora core 2. i saw there is a remote desktop connection that comes with it. i was wondering what service i need to install on my home machine to take advantage of that option. i want to be able to see my whole desktop, if possible. and what ports would i need to forward to accomplish this. thanks

the FC2 remote desktop is for logging into VNC or RDP (windows remote desktop) protocol servers.

So you'd need to run a vnc server at home.

Have a look into x11vnc its an excellent vnc client, I've used it a few times for setting up a vnc server, you may also want to have the http front end running, try using ports 443 and 80 as im sure your school will be blocking most other ports and vnc connections running on the default wont work...

i got a .tgz of x11vnc but dont really know how it works... how do i start the server? how do i change the ports? what is the difference between this and just vnc?? thanks

Its much better than vnc, did it all install successfully, no compile errors? CD into the dir where you compiled x11vnc, or if you did a make install you can just run x11vnc at the terminal, the "-rfbport portnumber" switch will allow you to specify the connection port.

how can i make the daemond start up automatically? i installed froma .tgz with no errors...

and how can i connect to my comptuer form a windows box?

Connect to it from a windows box using vncviewer, its part of any of the vnc software packages. So just download tighvnc on your windows box, and run vncviewer...
