Remote desktop

Hello everyone
I'm looking for a bit of advice and help, I,m very new to Linux having recently Installed ubuntu on my pc alongside windows XP, I have a wireless network that consists of 2 pc's and a server running freenas, I had an old pc lying around and decided to install a lightweight Linux distro (Peppermint), I,ve conected this pc to my router via ethernet cable an I want to use it purely through remote desktop as i've placed it in my attic alongside my router & server etc, can anyone advise me what is the best software to use and how I set up the remote connection, I've installed remmia on both pc's but dont have a clue how to configure it, also I would like to share the Peppermint pc's drive on the network and I'm not sure how to do that either, any help would be much appreciated

Many Thanks

Emegra

my personal preference would be to use nx from nomachine.org, you can get a two user version there for free (no need for freenx if you come across it) and it's great.

remmina is just a multi protocol client, that would come in later once you know how to get your desktop humming at all.

But do you need remote desktop features at all? you may well prefer just using X forwarding, or not bothering with X at all. You'll probably be very suprised how flexible things can be without the need for a whole desktop on display.

Hi acid and Thanks for your reply

I'll have a look nx as you suggest, please excuse my ignorance but I don't have a clue what x forwarding is or what you mean by "not bothering with x at all" I'm just looking for a simple and as painless as possible means to remotely connect to another pc's desktop withing my local network without making any manual changes to my router if possible, could you please explain what x forwarding is ?

Many Thanks

Hello again
I've had a look at nx as you suggested but I'm a little confused there seems to be 3 files to download and I'm not sure what file to install on what computer,I tried installing KRFB on the PC I intend to be the host(Linux Peppermint) but after installing it I can't find it anywhere, The PC I intend to be the client (Ubuntu 10.11) already has a desktop viewer installed by default so I don't think I need to install anything on that PC, All I want to do is configure the Peppermint PC for desktop sharing so as I can connect to it remotely from my Ubunto PC within a local lan, any further advice would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Emegra
