Remote Admin GUI
 

I would like to set up a linux box to act as router/fileserver/webserver/ftpserver, so I don't want to have a GUI on the server. But I'd like to have a GUI to do the admin tasks from a windows based machine. (similar to using mmc for a win NT based server, or what novell used to have, i can't remember what it was called). The idea being to have a gui front end to work with, but not having the overhead on the server and the network of a pcanywhere/vnc type solution. Any suggestions?

so can webmin display realtime cpu/memory/network usage?

No, you could telnet/ssh to the server for that. Webmin let you have a gui for the config of apps. Not sure of anything that would let you do that with out running X.

Since Webmin has a telnet/ssh component, you could use it to connect to the remote machine and run top to see the cpu/memory stats and iptraf for the network stats.

We have been using the e-smith linux server as a gateway server for the last couple of years. It is great. No gui, low hardware requirements, web admin and easy install. Would highly reccomend it as a gateway/server for basic use. See http://www.e-smith.org (now owned by Mitel, but still downloadable).

I just loaded e-smith 5.6 a couple of weeks ago after fighting config files on 4 or 5 other distros. e-smith is simple and works great to replace MS server. Install, setup, config and copy old server files in 65 minutes! And it worked perfectly without any intervention or further configuration.

Only drawback-Download and mirror sites SLOW!! but be patient it's worth the wait.
