Remote Access

What applications are out there for doing remote access in to a gnome desktop on a linux server? i have tried VNC but it seems to run really slow. Are there any others out there?

are there any that work over ssh?

What i want to be able to do is connect to my linux box from home on windows.

Thanks
Steve

You can improve the speed by lowering your colour depth and/or resolution, although depending on what you want to do it might not be suitable.

Alternatives:

You can tunnel an X session through ssh, but that is also slow (probably worse than VNC).

FreeNX is supposed to be faster, but I have not used it.

You want an NX client.
NX is like VNC, but quite fast. NoMachine is its creator, and makes a commercial version available.
It made part of its code open source. There are some open source projects making versions available.
I am not sure that any clients are available for windows other than NoMachine's, but it's free (as in beer), anyway.
