Redhat NooB!
 

Hey there, decided it was time i took the leap to a linux os. Bought my self a copy of Redhat 9 and a new hard drive.
Setup went fine (i think), got the computer working on a multi-boot with xp pro. So here i am, its installed. However i have not a clue what to do when i comes to drivers etc... i get no sound, i assume it doesnt recognise my sound card (Audigy 2), and the display is nasty but works. i have a 9800 pro and its not on the list of graphics cards already supported. So basicly, graphics needs setting up - i dont have a clue, and sound needs setting up - i dont have a clue either!

Much help is needed. What do i do to get my system running my hardware nicely? Once i have done that then i can start about learning Red Hat properly ( the 50hz refresh rate atm is doing my head in..... cant work out how to change it)!

Welcome to the *nix world Parky.

ATI cards do not have a very good default driver available under Linux. Not to mention the piss-poor 3D, try running tux-racer or something along those lines and watch the slide show commence. You should check out the ATI web site and download the rpms that they have available under "Linux Drivers". Once installed you should have decent 3D and video. You should also do a few google searches on the Redhat ATI 9700, 9800, etc issues. Quite a few people have run into the same problems here, and elsewhere on the net. You'll probably get some good info on the subject during the course of searching. You might also want to check out the drivers from the DRI project on sourceforge, I've heard that others have had good results with them. As for your Audigy 2, check out http://opensource.creative.com/ and get the driver from there. The install for this is a bit more complicated than installing an rpm, but this mailing list I ran across has some info on how to do it, (albeit on 8.0, but I imagine it's the same for 9) - http://www.redhat.com/archives/sound.../msg00033.html

Have you run SystemSettings-->Sound Card Detection?

EDIT: Also, disable PnP OS in the BIOS, it interferes with on board sound and video. Many times, just doing that, and sound is magically detected. :edit

Also, System Settings-->Display. Check the advanced tab and see if it detected your monitor. If NOT, you can find it, and even if not found, you can manually configure the horizontal and vertical rehresh rates if you have the monitor manual. Get rid of that 50Hz flickering, I can't imaging. :)
