Redhat Enterprise 5 showing as CentOS??? Are we being scammed?

We have a dedicated server with and have paid 270 to upgrade our operating system to Redhat Linux Enterprise 5.

In our admin area, it shows the server as built using redhat 5, however when we goto the page we see the "powered by CentOS" message.

Is this normal? Should it be a "powered by redhat" message?

I have asked their "technical support" but not received ANY response in the last 24 hours.

Thank you

It might be more to the point to call RedHat and ask them how to confirm your installation is RedHat rather than CentOS. I'm quite sure their lawyers would love to talk to a company that pretends it is a reseller for RedHat but isn't as you seem to think.

You might want to look at /etc/issue and /etc/redhat-release files to see what they say. Also you might want to see what repositories yum is using. The official RedHat repositories require a valid registration of your software to be used.

Just remember that CentOS IS compiled from the RHEL sources so you are pretty much running a RedHat type of OS. The main issue with misrepresentation if it is occurring is that the main reason you pay for RHEL is for support. If it is actually CentOS you may later run into a jam and get no support for it. This includes the repositories as I mentioned above. If all your support comes from the folks that sold it to you rather than directly from RedHat this may not be an issue. However, you would definitely want to think long and hard about the ethics of a company that would tell you they were selling you a commercial Linux and instead were pocketing the money by selling you a free Linux.

Note: I'm not a lawyer so all a layman's opinion.
