RedHat Alpha 6.2 eth0 "delaying initialization" problem
I recently installed RedHat 6.2 Alpha on an old DEC Multia. The install went fine *with some tweaking*. I know that the kernel I am using had the correct modules to utilize the onboard NIC as I installed the OS over FTP. However, after booting from the installtion (rather than setup media) when running service network start/ifup eth0 loopback is brought up and I then recieve the following error:
Delaying eth0 initialization. eth0 is never brought up, and running service network start results in the expected [FAILED] error. I have googled this a bit and seen some old mailing lists on the subject, but no definitative answer. The Multia does have 2 PCMCIA slots, however the ethernet card is a built in 10baseT. Also, I have statically configured eth0 and the config is correct. |
again, fixed my own problem. I had not finalized the install (like i said, some tweaking on the alpha) and was still using my boot kernel, not the installed one. once I installed MILO to disk and set it to use my system kernel, all was well.

Well done ;) excellent post and a good contribution to the forum.
Of course, anyone running RH8 or less is normally strongly urged to upgrade. However - installing an old OS to an old computer is probably wise. Keep up the good work. |
