redhat 9 kernel update

hi,
i would like to update my kernel (from binary package) , but people say that on newer redhats you can't just run rpm update on the kernel binary package and except this to work. so, who has done it recently? i use grub to boot.
your comments please.

if you can access RHN..do it from RHN if you are thinking of binaries.
Then simply edit grub/lilo to include the new kernel-image.

I did it from RHN.

Well in my case I didn't even had to update grub. RHN did the whole thing. After reboot I just picked the new kernel.
