Redhat 9, KDE, SSH... everything :)
 

Just installed Red Hat 9.0 at home, and am stuffing around to see what i can get working.
I'm actualy pretty stoked i got the modem working.

I don't have a lot of experience (only used linux through uni).

Anywho, the servers at uni use KDE. Seeing as i wanted to become more familiar with it by installing it at home, I selected it (and many of its options) when installing Red Hat.
However, when linux loads, it loads up Red Hat, with soem KDE programs thrown in, and not the KDE gui.

I was just wondering what I've missed?

Oh, the other thing; I tried to ssh a uni server from the Konsole, and it worked, but it tried to log me in as the root. I was wondering how to log in as a user?
what I tried:
ssh server.uni.edu.au

OK, now to try and find some drivers. woohoob.

OK, ignore my ssh question. I just remembered to read the man page, so i got that working.

still would like to know how to get KDE running as the gui though.

RH9 has "combined" GNOME and KDE to produce "BlueCurve." Many liker it; many don't. So, you haven't "missed" anything, you just have to go looking sometimes.

Get familiar with redhat-config-whatever (do a locate for redhat-config-*). These will help you configure your system.

If you don't like BlueCurve, you may be able to do something along the lines of "startx kde", although I'm not sure if that would work. Remember to stop your existing X server first

Yes, there is no MP3 player to be loaded with RH9, since MP3 is not open source. Google for mplayer, or winamp and see if that doesn't lead you to what you need.

As for setting up RH9 with KDE, you can do it! I don't recall how though. Look for themes somewhere in the control panel (?). Blue Curve is one of the themes. KDE is an option as I recall. I loaded RH9 but didn't care for their conservative selection of packages and versions. I'm running SuSE 8.2 now so I cannot see the exact options to turn KDE on.

shantesh - try xmms or mplayer, both are excellent music players for linux
