Redhat 9 does NOT install
 

Why?

I reboot the computer, I put the Redhat 9 CD in the drive and nothing. IT doenst bring up tyhe intal prgram, it doesnt even doesn't even start to boot Linux.

I downloaded the CD's from the Redhat site, should i go out and buy the book and discs?

Is your cd drive bootable? Most recent ones are, but if it's particularly old, it might not be.

I started off in Redhat, and I bought the book and dvd. It all worked fine, and the books are generally very useful if you're starting out in Linux, so it may be a wise idea.

the CD-Rom IS bootable.

Redhat 7.3 worked.

And I do have literature that I can refer to, including many O'Reily books, and Redaht 5.2 manual.

I suppose I could look at buying a new Redhat book.

i'm clueless then. if redhat 7.3 worked, and the cdrom's bootable, the only thing i could think of would be to check that the cds burned ok. sorry not to be of more help

It's cool the cd's burned alright because I can see the files on them.

Is there another way that I can install Redhat 9?

You could make boot disks.

also, I have a boot disk from installing Redhat 7.3, problem is, when i use it in my computer Red Hat 7.3 starts up.

When you burned the .iso's you downloaded, did you just copy the .iso's or did you write the .iso? If you just copied it, it won't work. Did you check the md5's after downloading?

I have a packard bell 120 mhz that I use valhalla7.3 because 9.0 won't take. It will start to install then lock up at about the package selection. Both in text and the other install. :scratch:

Did you configure your BIOS so that CDs are used for booting before the HDD?

as mentioned in another thread Mike, just "burn" the ISOs instead of copying the ISOs to the CDs directly. Again Fireburner or Nero are suitable for that.

That'll create your bootable RED HAT CDs and it all should work without any or just minor problems :)

it did help. and i got it to work.

2 problems

1) the second ISO was bad, no biggie just have to redownload it.

2) X windows doesnt start on the install. My monitor just goes dead. I am gues that my GeForce FX 5200 isnt supporte by Redhat 9.

Which is odd considering it worked as a generic VESA card for Redhat 7.3

video Card not working on Newer Distros
 

I've seen in support forums for Lycoris and Mandrake that in the Newer Linux Distros (which all contains the Newer versions of XFree86) that driver support for older cards seems to be phasing out. (Thanks to the XFree86 Team). So if you have a somewhat older video Card (I did an S3Trio3D-4MB) you may find as I did the easiest path of resistance is to get e newer card. Unforturnately there are few places that offer a good selection of video cards. Fry's Electronics (west coast usually has the best selection, Best Buy carries the newest fasted badest, most expensive)

I thought GeForce FX 52000 was one of the newest cards out there?
