Question Redhat 8.. seems slow

I just installed redhat 8 a few days ago, my first linux installation. So far, linux seems cool, but it seems rather slow compared to my highly tweaked out windows2kpro setup on the same machine. Unreal2003 is getting bad fps... like 30ish on a gf4ti4600, and the OS just seems generally slow. Here's a list of my hardware:

Abit KG7-Raid
Athlon 1.4ghz
Maxtor 20g ata 133 7200 rpm
Gainward CardExpert Geforce 4 ti4600
512 mb crucial ddr
Creative "Ovation" DVD drive
SB Live! 5.1
Redhat 8.0 w/ newest kernel

Are there some general tweaks I can apply to speed things up a bit? My drive is only getting 40mb/sec and it looks like all the important things are enabled via hdparm. I want pure speed basically, so any tweaks are appreciated

Tom, have you installed the nVidia binary drivers? By default Redhat will use the open source "nv" driver, which I have found causes speed problems. Using the nVidia official drivers gave significant speedups for me, I highly recommend them.

You can find instructions for doing this here:

Unfortunately it's more complex than it otherwise would be as nVidia have not released Redhat 8 RPMs, so while you're at it you could email them and ask for psyche specific rpms.

thanks -mike
