Redhat 8 install prob
 

right now im tyring to take a systemax that had windows xp on it and turn it into a linux machine, whenever i try to format the xp it tells me incorrext dos version, anyways i finally deleted the partitions but when i try to boot off of the liunx cd, it starts and then i get irq erros as follows:
hda IDE probe failed (0xfffffff8)
hdb IDE probe failed (0xfffffff8)
hdc IDE probe failed (0xfffffff8)

and a buch more stuff i coudlnt write down fast enough, then it contiues to do a partition check and then it brings up a blue screen like it is going to start the install and then it just stays there

please someone post a fix so i can install redhat

In your manual (you can get it from the Red Hat website if you don't have one), there are instructions on how to check the other consoles during an installation. These are accessed by Crtl+Alt+the function key corresponding to the console number. For example, console one is Crtl+Alt+F1, two is Crtl+Alt+F2, etc. Each of these consoles has a special function during the install, including keeping a log, which should have all the errors that are displaying too fast to copy. When the install program locks up, switch to the log and write down what it says.

Other questions:

Are you using a downloaded version or do you have disks from Red Hat? There a many threads on this site covering the problems with the downloaded version. Search Red Hat 8.0 Install and you'll find them.

What kind of system are you installing this on? What type of motherboard, cpu, etc? Anything out of the ordinary about your computer? Some cosmic sound system? SCSI? Anything that might require a special install? Search this site for your particulars associated with RH 8.0--good chance someone else has already fixed the problem.

At what point did RH lock up? This kind of ties to the opening question, but did you get to the point of telling it what kind of install you wanted to do? I ask because the partitioning is after that. If you did select an install type--what was it?

How did you delete the partitions? What configuration did you leave your disk (or disks) in? Unformatted? NTFS?

What is your end goal? A linux-only machine? A dual-boot machine?

As you can see, there a number of possibilities here and more information is needed. Get back to us with these answers and it should narrow things down. If my explanations have confused you, my apologies--just post what you don't understand.

yes i am using the downloaded version and there is nothing special about the machine, it is a 1.3 celron (pos if you ask me) but were trying to make it work in hopes of running a windows file server off it at my school, and where it locked up, well it gets past all the text and soon as it hits the graphics, just a plain blue screen, probally where is starts anaconda, it locks, i ran the same downloaded version at my house which im on right now and we loaded on the comp teachers machine and it works fine on both places, i dont know if that will help you narrow it down any but thanks for helping

Okay, the hard drive is attached to the IDE controller (hda in Linux)--about 40GB? We're dealing with a PC and not a laptop and it is less than two years old. Pretty close?

If all of this is still pretty new to you, the PDF files will be the easiest to work with. The 'x86 Installation Guide' is the installation manual. 'Getting Started Guide' and 'Reference Guide' are also very informative. Look them over--they'll have troubleshooting that might get you past Anaconda (such a not probing).

Did my explanation about the other consoles make sense? The information from there would still be useful, as would the status of the hard drive.

I pulled out my install manual to check some things. The information that is put on the other consoles is explained in Chapter 3, Para 3.1.1. The table on the next page looks like the information from consoles 1, 3 & 4 might be interesting. Again, this information is only there during the installation.

Section 1 talks about installation. As with most instruction manuals, this one is written for the group that bought the CDs. For those folks, Red Hat, like everyone else, makes it very easy. For the folks who downloaded the ISO images, they make it a little more challenging.

Forgive me if I get very basic with you, but let's back up to how you were trying to install RH. Were you using a boot disk? How were the CD-ROMs and (if applicable) the boot disk burned/made? How confident are you that Red Hat's instructions for properly burning the CD-ROMs and rawriting the boot disk were followed?

Here's the link to RH's instructions for downloading: https://www.redhat.com/download/howto_download.html. There is also information in Section 1.4 of the manual. Step back from the frustration and look for what went wrong--and don't just gloss over the simple stuff. More times than not, that is where the problem is.

Also, keep reminding yourself that this 'pos' as you call it was capable of running Windows XP, a very demanding operating system. If it will run XP, it will run Linux. The computers that many of us run RH 8.0 on are much less powerful than the one you are dealing with. It will run Red Hat and you're going to beat this.

I hav ethis exact problem... see post in Newbie section.... blue screen system hangs and then .. Anaconda starts up and tells me I can reboot... I have the documentation cd's and ther boxed set with the book.... nothing in it even come close to addressing this problem... it all assumes you can actually get to the first part of the install process?

The only error I get in over the blue screen itself, somethign to the effect of
"error 2 reading header: cpio: Bad magic" then anaconda kicks in to kill the system install??

I'll be watching this post to see if anything crops up?

ctrl+alt+F3 shows one fail *failed to load partport_pc module
ctrl+alt+F4 shows one error <4> End request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 1286396

Hope this gives insight to anyone solving pyropenguins problem.. and hopefully mine?!?!?! :-)

I used a win98 diskto boot and to get access to the REDHAT 8.0 CD1, accessed dosutils folder on the cd and ran the autoboot file..... worked great, I am currenlty 4mins from finishing my install.... maby this will help?!?!

i still havent solved my problem, i learned that when it fails hda hdb hdc its the different channels of ide pimary secondary etc, and later it winds up seeing the hard drive, and after seriosly 10-15 min it brings up the blue screen prolly when its trying to load anaconda im assuming, but it dont say that anywhere, and then one time i let it sit for a long time and got it to ask me if i want to test or skip the test on the cd, but it froze when it got to that screen, and i have tested my cds on 2 other comps and they check out fine on both, i also looked and am still looking on the redhat site for something about this but i cant find anything! maybe someone knows something more by now?
