REDHAT 7.2 (ENIGMA) - XWindows problem

I just installed Redhat 7.2 onto an old pentium machine. When booting up everything results as [OK].
I get to the prompt for USER: and PASSWORD:
I log on as ROOT with the password I have for it.
I then proceed to start XWindows by entering <b>"startx".</b>
X Windows starts and I see the mouse moving, I click and I get a popup window, BUT i dont see any icons or menu options. Why is this? How can I check to see if KDE or Gnome is installed?
I tried using "Xconfigurator" and tried different screen resolutions and I still get the same result.

Please help! any help would be most appreciated.

Well boot up the installation disks and install Gnome or KDE just incase, and this time select it to start off in a GUI interface.....or do you prefer to start up at console?
