Is there a way to instal RH 7.1 when past the 1024 cylinder? In RH 7.0 you could still allocate and format the / partion when past the 1024 cylinder. Then I would use a boot disk (created during the install) to load Linux and add lba32 to lilo.conf. However, with RH 7.1 I can't even allocate the / partition. Any suggestions?

I don't know how RH 7.1 works but a general tip for large disks are to make small partition at the very beginning of the disk, size about 20 MB. This is where the kernel is located and can be reached by BIOS. Then when linux is kernel is started it is able to reach the whole disk, without using BIOS.

Here is what I did

The first 12 GB of my drive is my Windows partition (which I didn't feel like messing with). First I set the my drive to LBA mode (in the BIOS). In this mode the drive still has ~2500 cylinders. Then I ran the RedHat installer. I made a small /boot partition (along with my normal /, /home, and swap partitions). The installer wouldn't allocate the /boot partition but it also DID NOT CRASH. Then I clicked on next and had the installer format the / and /home partitions. After this the install was straight forward. The space allocated to /boot is lost, but a few less megs won't kill me
