Redhat 6.2 to 7.0 -- Upgrade or Fresh Install?
 

I am planning to upgrade my Redhat 6.2 server. I have several things wrong with it...and most everyone I spoke with said that going to 7.0 would fix them.

I noticed that in the 7.0 install it would ask if I wanted to upgrade my existing installation. I have also been told not to UPGRADE but to doa full install. This is because of going from one major release to another. Is this true? What is the best way to get a CLEAN installation of Redhat 7.0 and still be able to run my companys DNS and POSTFIX mail in less than a weekend?

I'm not sure as to the specifics of the effects of an upgrade (as far as what files get over written, which ones are left that shouldn't be). I always tend to think a clean install is "better". From practical experience, however, I can say that I've upgraded several times (ex: from 5.2 to 6.0 and from 6.2 to 7.0) on different machines and have never had any problem. The only issue I've ever encountered was not having enough disk space. And that was my fault.

Upgrading with Redhat since 5.2 has been very reliable I have upgraded from 5.2 to 6.0 to 6.1 to 7.0 to 7.1 and I have not had a problem with losing any of my settings. If it is your first time upgrading you must be careful when selecting packages that are new to the version and you must be patient. Depending on the size of your install and the number of packages that you have, it may take about 6 to 8 hours. Mandrake takes even longer even though both distros are based on Redhat.
