#1 Have you configured networking on that NIC interface? Have you given it an IP address? Ping does not work on MAC addresses, it needs and IP address, and it is unclear if the interface HAS one.
#2 RHEL5 went EOL in 2017. Unless you are on extended support (lasts to 2020), in which case you should be talking to RH Support. In fact, if you paid for RHEL support then you should be talking to RH Support anyway. Why are you using an obsolete version on a new PC?
Besides that, the version RHEL 5.0 is an ancient 2007 version.
Update to the latest = version 5.11 to get year 2014 drivers.
No, start at least with one of the RHEL 6.x ones (6.10 is the most recent one), because for those you can still get the latest kernel updates and security fixes.
Even RHEL 5.11 is (almost) 5 years out-of-date by now and ALL of them use an ancient 2.6.18 kernel (so without backported patches it is a big security risk).
I bought a bunch of linux books back in 1998. Most came with RedHat 5.1. So which one are we talking about? RHEL, or RedHat 5.0 which is 20+ years old now.
