Red Hat Linux 9.0 login problems as root

Hello,

We have a Red Hat Linux 9.0 machine that was recently switched to a different network with a different DHCP server. Since then we have been unable to log in as root or as any other user. When the system boots up everything is detected, but when I get to the login console and enter root and the password it waits for a few seconds and then goes right back to the login prompt. If I enter the wrong password it detects I have entered a wrong password. Network connectivitiy appears to be fine.

I've tried booting in as single-user mode, which is successful, but I can't determine the new IP address of the machine since I can't log in through the console. We have subversion running on this machine and can't access it unless we get the new IP address.

Does anyone have any advice how I can login as root or any other user?

Thanks.

Any clues in the system logs? Especially "pam" lines.

Thanks. The host in the ldap.conf was pointing to the IP on the old network. Once I changed that to reflect the new one and the system rebooted, it worked. Once again, thanks for your help.
