Red Hat keeps freezing
when I'm running RH lets say I'm browsing the web, and for no reason all of a sudden it freezes, making me have to restart my pc, I updated to the newest kernel on up2date which is 2.4.20-9 ? anyways what else could be causing this problem? also when I was updating the kernel it froze too, but it already installed it, my motherboard is a MSI 865PE NEO2-FIS2R and I was wondering about upgrading to 2.4.22 to see if that would fix it, any other ideas?

This happens at random times? Is it always when you're browsing the web? If it has only happened since you upgraded your kernel, that could be the problem. Your best bet is probably to compile the kernel yourselfm since the precompiled one might have stuff in that you don't want, which might be causeing it. Can't think of anything else particularly though.
Also, when you say it freezes completely, have you tried pressing Ctrl-Alt-F2 (or in fact any of F1-6)? This should take you to a console, where you can log in as root, type "ps -e" to list all processes, find out where X is running, and kill it (with "kill pid", where pid is the process ID). Then you can restart it with "startx". |
it freezes all the time, not randomly, and it freezed before I updated the kernel, I'll try pressing Ctrl-Alt-F2 and see if I can get into console

welp I was trying to complie the new kernel but it froze again, I think Im going to try mandrake or do a total fresh install of redhat with only the basics
