Hi All,

I have been having my own personal nightmare with Red Hat Fedora 4. I started with Red Hat Linux v8 and just needed the operating system to run Perl TK for a current job. I am trying to load it on a Toshiba Satellite Pro (Pentium III, used)

I first bought "The Practical Guide to Linux" with a 4 CD copy of Red Hat Fedora 4, but it blew out on the 2nd CD saying it had a corrupt fileset. I then moved on to "All In One- Red Hat Fedora 4 Linux" by Sams Publishing, which had the whole distribution on one DVD.

The software loaded relatively easily, but after I created the boot, swap, root, and other partitions and loaded the software, it boots the GUI and then eventually the floating "X" vanishes, leaving a white screen. Can't seem to get anywhere to reconfigure the terminal display, so it appears dead in the water. I am relatively new to Linux, so would appreciate any advice or help! What IS this???? I have a long road ahead (still haven't LOADED Perl TK, then I have to learn it before I'm fired!)

can u do a console install?
can you give us a bit more detailed info about the possible error's?

does the problem occur with only this os or does it act weird with other distro's?
(test this with livecd)

do you have all the needed drivers?
anyway, you need to provide us with more info.

I have tried both a graphical and a text based install. With the graphical install, it immediately brings up the white screen with the X pointer, then it disappears leaving a blank white screen, no install possible.
With the text based install, I go through the whole install process with the text based menus, until I get to the screen which should say the Welcome to Fedora. At this point once again the white screen with the X pointer, the X disappears and the blank white screen.

It appears to have chosen the wrong video driver for the laptop, although I have installed Red Hat 8 and Knoppix 3.6 easily. I don't see anywhere however where I can bring up a terminal configuration screen and choose another video setting.

At some point during the install (graphical mind you) there is the display settings to pick your res/GFX card/Monitor.

I would imagine there is an equivelent for text install.

That is the problem. The boot disk just says "Hit Enter for Graphical Install" immediately when you boot from CD. After you hit enter, there is the blank screen and you can't input anything.
I just tried "linux noprobe" and apparently it auto-detected a CardBus PCMCIA Controller (yenta_socket). When I proceeded, I got the white screen lockup. I wonder if there is a way to tell from the command line, or elsewhere what device driver to manually set it to. That is where I am currently.......
