Question Red Hat AS v3 and WindowsXP - Dual Boot

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any ponters on how to dual boot Windows XP and Red Hat Linux Advanced Server version 3.

I reinstalled my laptop (since it was time for cleanup anyway), and I only have one hard disk, I already installed windows xp on the primary partition and created a data partition for my files and other stuff. I also left a certain amount of unpartitioned space (10GB) for the linux installation.

I want to use the bootloader of windows xp, like I always use to do with Red Hat AS 2.1, but AS v3 is based on Red Hat 9, where the installer does not give you an option to write the Linux bootloder (GRUB) into any other partition but the primary MBR, which I dont want to do.

My question is, is there any way to make the linux installer write the bootloader and linux boot sector to my allocated linux partition (/dev/hda3) instead of the primary MBR (/dev/hda)?

This was possible before because the installer gave me the option where to write the linux boot, so I would have it write it to the linux partition and only have to boot off the linux CD, in rescue mode, after the installation, to be able to extract the linux boot to a file that I could manually add to the windows boot loader.

Or is there a way to install linux, not have the boot written to MBR, and still get to extract the boot from the linux partition? Problem is, I dont know where to get this boot record since I didnt have it write a boot record in the first place.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Oops! Sorry... I found how to make the installer write the linux boot to the designated linux partition and not to the MBR. I just had to click on the "Configure Advanced Bootloder Options" (DUH???), to make me choose what partition I want to write the bootloader (GRUB).

I was just always so hesitant at clicking "Next" in fear that it might already overwrite the MBR.

Anyway, sorry for the inconvenience.
