Question Red Hat 9 / WIn XP dual boot issue

Greetings and thanks in advance for any help. I have loaded Red Hat Linux on a separate drive on a system that has Win XP running already. I asked that it install GRUB not on the MBR but took the other choice (first sector of the boot partition). Now when I boot the machine the only thing that happens after BIOS finishes is that the GRUB word appears and nothing else happens from there.

My intention was to edit c:\boot.ini to give the dual boot option and load the linux.bin file on c: (as described in several web articles). But I have not gotten that far. Any ideas on how I can get past the GRUB word on the screen after BIOS? (I am surprise that at least linux is not booting up since GRUB seems to have take over :-()

Thanks!

Gery

it's sort of obvious that grub did end up on the mbr.
i don't know a specific util, but booting with the XP
cdrom, and picking check disk or something should
install the bootloader back, shouldn't it.
i guess you could try again with lilo.

use a bootdisk instead and as suggested, fix your mbr by putting in the xp cd rom and using the repair option or whatever it is.

ggross,

why don't you just use the grub loader to dual boot? Is there a reason why you don't want to use grub?

Thanks for the swift replies. As it turns out, I caused the problem inadvertantly by setting the boot order in BIOS to my 2nd hard drive (the one with Linux on it) and not windows. I did this last month as I was attempting to install gentoo linux, with no luck (and after spending too many hours trying). So I set hda in the boot order after floppy instead of hdb and Windows strarted up.

I did not want to GRUB installed on the MBR because that is what I tried with the gentoo install and it hosed my Win disk during two attempts. I don't know enough about this stuff to understand what happened and I'm sure it's because I did something wrong. I'm glad it's working now and I hope it stays that way.

Thanks again for the replies.

Gery
