Unhappy Red Hat 9 boot up freezes.

Hi all. When I try to start Red Hat 9, everything goes smoothly until it reaches the point where it says "Creating root device" (no quotes). Then it freezes. I do not know what to do, as I am very new to Linux. Also, I have previously run Windows 95 on this system. Specs are below:

Intel Celeron 1.8 Ghz
253MB DDR RAM
20GB HDD
CD-RW 4x4x32

If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx,
Adam S.

I'v noticed a spelling error since I posted this. It should read:

.....
256MB DDR RAM
.....
