Red Hat 9.0 (Host)and Vmware 4.0 problems with network

Recently i have installed Vmware 4.0 workstation on my computer running Red Hat 9.0 (Shrike) kernel version 2.4.20-8
So i've installed Vmware, accepted to make a network connection then i've installed windowsxp and now i want windows xp to connect to my Host O/S. Vmware has emulated an ethernet switch for me. When entering to "Network Device Control" i see the device eth0 but i cannot start that device it always says "Cannot activate network device eth0" or "nvnet device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization:
Also i know that vmware doesn't support RedHat 9.0 but maybe it's possible to make the ethernet card work in some way
Thanks :-)
