Red Hat 8.0 SMP / Poweroff Problems

Hi, I just installed RH 8.0, on a dual processor machine, and also on a single processor machine... When it boots up on the dual processor, I select the RH 8.0 SMP to run, and on the other machine, I just select the default(NOT smp).

When I do a 'poweroff' command on the dual processor, it says "shutting down all devices" and finally "powerdown", but the system just sits there, it doesn't go off..

When I do the same 'poweroff" on the single processor machine, it goes down completely, which is what I need.

I also tried loading the following module as root:

modprobe apm
*But I get an error saying "cannot locate module apm"

I also tried this:

"apm=power_off" to the end of the SMP kernel line /etc/grub.conf, still no luck..

//**I noticed an error message during boot up that said something like:

APM Disabled in smp mode since it is unstable
APM not supported in kernel

hi

you got your answer. thats it. apm is just disabled because it conflicts with smp support in Linux 2.4. if you arent using a production level server you may want to try out the new linux 2.6 test 4 kernel
