Recovering partition

Is there a way in linux to recover information from a partition which has somehow lost its file system?

I have a drive that crashed hard. Both WinXP and Linux think the drive is just RAW, but there _was_ informatoin on it.

Is there a way to restore the file system table so I can access the files?

I am using Slack 10.0, the drive I am trying to recover is /dev/hdb7. Thanks!

I got my hands on Partition Magic, thought it might have a recovery tool. Doesn't appear so.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Does partition magic see it as "raw" also? You should be able to write new lable or merge it without losing the data.

PM sees it as "unformmated"

You suggest I "Merge" it with a partition that is still okay?

*EDIT* Just attempted to "merge" the partitions though PM. I get an error saying that it doesn't see 2 partitions that it can properly merge.

Hmmm. Unformatted. Don't know what you can do then. I have never googled for data recovery programs, but might be an idea if that data is important.

i just used r-linux www.r-tt.com

it runs from windows and seems ok but some recovered files a re reported as only 0kb

you will need to put the drive in another machine as a slave tho'

good luck
