Recovering a mysql database

I had a database running as a backend to a website on my old hardrive. Although I can mount this drive fine, I can't boot from it, nor can I start mysql server if I chroot it. Copying the files at /var/lib/mysql/mydatabase/* doesn't work either. Does anyone know how I could recover this file?

What do you mean by "Copying the files at /var/lib/mysql/mydatabase/* doesn't work either"? Does the copy produce an error or can you not access that db from mysql? If it is the latter then try using myisamchk to repair the tables. If you can't even make the copy, can you let us know what filesystem you are using.
