Record and watch TV at the same time

Hey LQ

I have a winTV card and I can watch and record TV. I use mplayer when I want to watch TV and mencoder when I want to record. However It can't do both at the same time. It seems that only one program can access /dev/video0 at one time.

IS there a way I can watch and record at the same time or some work-a-rounds?

Thanks

The only way to watch TV and record it at the same time is with mplayer and ffmpeg via x11grab using the geometry and corners of the active window. Surprisingly, it did a great job, video and audio are in perfect sync and no delays in video playback.

You don't have to do a screen capture. Dump the stream to file, buffer for a min then play the file. You will watch and record at the same time.
Code:
mplayer dvb://WABC -dumpstream -dumpfile output.ts && sleep 20 && mplayer ouput.ts
