After recompiling my original 2.4.18-14 kernel like this:
-make mrproper
-make xconfig
-make dep
-make bzImage
-make modules
-make modules_install
-make install
When i rebooted I got this error message:
"Kernel Panic: No init found. Try passing the 'init=' argument to the kernel"
So I tried adding 'init=/initrd' in grub, but it didn't solve anything!
<Note: I use lilo, do not use grub so I don't know if this will be of help>
after 'make modules_install' I type 'cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/new-kernel-image' then add an entry to lilo.conf and I have to rerun lilo to rewrite the boot sector of the disk for the new kernel... (even if you're just replacing an old one.) Is this rewriting of the bootsector possibly also a requirement of Grub? If you make changes to grubs config do you need to rerun grub before restarting the machine?
