Recompile tsocks - quick question

I am going to need to patch the source of tsocks and recompile it but I have never had to do this - well I have never had to do it this way(where I dont start fresh) - the tsocks I have now was part of my debian install - if I just download the source and patch and compile it will that do it, or do I need to remove the other one somehow?

Thanks in advance

I'd suggest you D/L the source, patch it, compile into a package and install. This way you'll still be able to enumerate, verify, uninstall or upgrade using your distros package management tools. If you don't have the skills to build a package you could ask for help (in a separate thread) or use something like 'installwatch' to install from tarball. This way at least you know what files were installed where. And please think about proper thread titles. Your question was not specifically about tsocks but more a generic one dealing with software installation or package management best practices. (BTW, if you use Tsocks a lot check out the TOR project website. Somewhere it lists a tsocks package with patches that address certain flaws or enhance or add functionality.)
