recompile kernel for hfs support
I burned a cd on my mac to help get my now network-less linux box networked (dhcp lynx etc). I realized that macs use hfs (or hfs+ ?) filesystem not only on hard drives, but cd's too. "mount -t hfs /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom" complained about the kernel not supporting hfs, so I decided to just add it in and recompile. "make menuconfig" got me into the configuration, where under filesystems I could not find an "hfs" option.
How do I compile hfs support into my kernel?

it's under miscellaneous file systems.
However, I don't think you should need to do that. I'm pretty sure that any decent burning program for mac should burn iso9660, since thats pretty much the international standard for cds.

thanks fibbi, but I still don't see it. I have a 2.4.26 kernel. One of the first menu options is "filesystems" and in that I do not see "miscellaneous filsystems" or "hfs." Oh, and I really don't think I'm blind but I suppose anything is possible.
And as far as iso9660 vs hfs goes, I don't have that option as I'm using my mac's internal burning routines to burn and it doesn't even give me a choice.

Ok, I checked it again, and did not find anything. It seems it should be there too. Then I found this on the web and got really frustrated.
Quote:
Since late in the 2.1.x series of kernels, the HFS module has been part of the main Linux kernel distribution. You should not need to download any of the software on this page unless you have an exceptionally old Linux kernel.

Ok, so I looked at the kernel .config file. I found an entry for "HFS" and it was commented out with all the other options that were not selected. I uncommented it and added =y (like the selected options) and ran "make menuconfig." There still was not a hfs option and upon quiting and saving, "HFS" was once again commented. I'd be afraid to uncomment "HFS" and then start compiling. Anyone agree that's a bad idea? What should I do? Try a different kernel?

get the latest 2.6 kernel. Thats what i use. Again though, i'd be absolutely certain that a simple mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom won't work before you go through all. No mac cd i've ever burned used a weird FS.
